Parenting is a challenging, but rewarding role. All parents have different approaches to parenting dependent on personality and culture but where to you stand on risk?
Whilst watching your child enjoy physical activities, think about what you would do if your child was trying to climb an area that could propose a risk of falling. What would you do?
Go and physically remove them from the situation? Tell them “No” from afar and to “get down as it’s too dangerous”? Or would you simply leave them to carry on?
What about if your child actually did fall! Would you again run over to help them up and comfort them, or would you wait to see their reaction?
We all want to protect our children from harm but are we over protecting them?
Assessing and managing risk is an important life skill, so letting your child explore and learn through outdoor play activities will equip them with the confidence to tackle challenges and make decisions based on consequence. Children that are inquisitive have a sense of adventure. Adventure opens up opportunity to develop these physical actions.
So instead of stopping them, let them tell you what could happen and then leave it to them to decide if they want to take the risk or not. Use narrative talk for younger children who are unable to communicate verbally.
Mundo Mania is the perfect environment to encourage kids to explore through physical activity while parents can be rest-assured that the risks are minimal.
Our play centre offers a wide range of kids activities and play areas, including soft play, climbing frames, slides, trampolines, multi sports pitches and a splash zone, which are designed to encourage kids to explore, discover, learn, and develop. So if you’re looking for things to do with your kids, look no further, at Mundo Mania the fun and opportunities are endless.
As Tom Mullarky (Chief Executive of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) said “Keep children as safe as necessary, not as safe as possible”.
